The School of Sports and Health invites passionate and driven individuals to join its dynamic team in advancing sports, health and outdoor education. The Diploma in Outdoor Education (DOE) team aspires to be a recognised thought leader and trusted partner in research, training and development within the outdoor education, recreation and inclusive practice sectors.

[What you will be working on]

Job Responsibilities

The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer for the Diploma in Outdoor Education will contribute to

teaching, curriculum development, student mentoring, programme delivery and industry engagement in the following areas:

Deliver quality Pre-Employment Training (PET) modules and Continuing Education and

Training (CET) programmes in outdoor education and related areas, including:

• Climbing and Abseiling

• Kayaking

• Challenge Course Management

• Land-based outdoor skills such as campcraft and navigation

• Supervision and management

• Instruction and Facilitation

• Adventure and experiential education

• Youth Outreach and Development

• Environmental studies and Nature interpretation

• Expedition Management

• Demonstrate a strong commitment to holistic student development, including

mentoring, guidance, and support for students’ academic, personal, and professional

growth.

• Serve as a positive role model for students, exemplifying professionalism, integrity,

care, and responsible conduct in all learning and engagement contexts.

Develop, review and enhance curriculum to ensure alignment with current industry practices, applied research, safety standards and emerging trends in outdoor education.

• Design and facilitate authentic, experiential and student-centred learning experiences

that develop students’ technical competence, confidence, leadership, resilience and

reflective practice.

• Uphold robust safety, risk management and operational standards during practical

lessons, field-based learning, expeditions and outdoor programmes.

• Build and sustain partnerships with industry, community and professional bodies to

support curriculum relevance, student development, applied projects and continuing

education opportunities.

[What we are looking for]

• Relevant qualifications in outdoor education, sports, recreation, education, health, or related discipline, with at least 5 years of relevant industry experience.

• Good written and oral communication skills.

• Strong time management, organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines.

• Agility to learn and adapt to changes.

• Demonstrates a strong passion for outdoor education, with responsibility, reliability, independence, initiative in problem-solving, resourcefulness and the ability to work effectively in a team.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain quality working relationships with students, colleagues, and stakeholders.

• Proficient in the following methods of instruction and facilitation skills:

o Group management skills

o Group facilitation and review skills

o Presentation and lecturing skills

o Programme/game design and lesson planning skills

• Preferably holds relevant certifications in outdoor and adventure skills such as:

o Kayak Level 3 Coaching and/or

o Climbing Instructor Category 2 and/or

o Abseiling Level 3.

o First Aid and CPR AED certification

• Experience in designing and conducting programmes for participants with disabilities, older adults or children will be an advantage.
