Position Description
The School of Information at San José State University is pleased to announce a search for Assistant Professor of Cultural Heritage Informatics, AI/Digital Transformation, and Critical Technology Studies beginning in August 2027. We especially welcome applicants whose work advances the emerging field of Critical Technology Studies, investigating how technological systems shape knowledge production, cultural memory, access to information, social equity, democratic participation, and institutional practice.
The School of Information (iSchool - SJSU - School of Information - Information Science School ) prepares professionals who organize, preserve, analyze, protect, teach, and improve access to information across communities and institutions. Our new faculty member will join a scholarly community with:
thousands of students and a broad global alumni community;
one of the largest and most diverse schools in the information field;
fully online graduate programs that support working professionals;
an ALA-accredited MLIS program;
an emphasis on access, equity, community service, digital literacy, and ethical technology; and
a commitment to working on problems connected to information access, AI literacy, digital preservation, cybersecurity, and social justice.

Required Qualifications
Earned doctorate in Library and Information Science, Information Studies, Informatics, Archives, Museum Studies, Digital Humanities, Science and Technology Studies, Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
Demonstrated expertise in cultural heritage collections, archives, libraries, museums, information systems, or related information environments.
Evidence of scholarship, teaching, or professional practice related to digital transformation, emerging technologies, or critical technology studies.
The candidate will be expected to contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives, pursue external funding opportunities, and collaborate with libraries, archives, museums, educational institutions, government agencies, industry partners, and community organizations.
Demonstrated commitment to student success, accessibility, and community-engaged information practice.
Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
Preferred Qualifications
An active scholarly agenda examining the relationships among information systems, artificial intelligence, cultural heritage, data infrastructures, communities, and society.
Record of collaboration with libraries, archives, museums, schools, technology organizations, policy organizations, or community partners.
Ability to contribute across multiple School of Information degree programs.
Experience teaching in online, hybrid, or distributed learning environments.

Contribute across multiple graduate programs and support the School's tradition of innovative online education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and socially engaged information practice.
Teach and collaborate across the School of Information's programs and certificates.
Participate in service activities that support the School, University, profession, and broader information community.
Participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
Other Duties
Note that all San José State University employees are considered mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and are required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and CSU systemwide policy, some faculty duties may lead to designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSAs are required to complete Clery Act training and to immediately report Clery incidents to the institution.
Faculty employees must complete CSU employee training as assigned and required based on their role (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety). The President may recommend or require compliance with safety measures that decrease the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission or illness and allows the core mission and activities of the campus to continue.

The work for this faculty position may only be performed in the State of California and requires establishing an on-campus presence.
