Figures, tables & media

3 min readUpdated 10 July 2026Documents & the editor

Manuscripts are rarely just text. The editor supports figures, tables, equations, and other media as first-class blocks, inserted from the Insert menu, the toolbar, or the slash menu (type / on an empty line).

Images & figures

You can add an image in any of these ways:

  • Choose Image from the Insert menu or slash menu, then pick a file.
  • Drag an image file from your desktop straight into the page.
  • Paste an image, or paste a link to embed it from the web.

Once placed, drag the side handles to resize, and use the image toolbar to align it, expand it to full view, or download the original. Select Write a caption beneath the image to label your figure.

Tables

Insert a table from the Insert or slash menu. Hovering the table edges reveals controls to add rows and columns, and cells support the same formatting as body text. Header rows keep large tables readable.

Equations

The editor supports display equations as their own block and inline equations within a sentence. Insert either from the slash menu (Equation and Inline equation) and write standard mathematical notation.

Video, audio, files & more

Beyond figures and tables, the Insert and slash menus offer further blocks, including:

  • Video and audio embeds, with captions like images.
  • File attachments for supplementary material.
  • Code blocks, callouts, columns, quotes, and dividers for structure.
  • A table of contents generated from your headings.
  • Footnotes, plus academic blocks such as citations; see Citations & bibliographies.
