You decide who can see and use each dataset. Visibility is set per dataset, and everything built on top of a dataset, including charts, respects that setting.
The visibility levels
- Private: only you. This is the default for every new upload.
- Shared: visible to the specific people you share it with; sharing is per person rather than with a whole workspace. Data shared with you is collected at Shared with me in the data hub.
- Public: visible to everyone, including signed-out visitors.
- Official: public datasets in the platform’s curated library of reference sources, browsable at Official data. These are maintained by Scholardemia rather than set by individual users.
How visibility affects charts
A chart can never be more visible than the dataset it draws from: charts on a private dataset stay private, and charts on a shared dataset can reach at most the same people. Widening a dataset’s visibility is therefore the first step towards publishing or embedding a chart; see Share & embed charts.
Before making data public, check that it contains nothing that identifies research participants and nothing you lack the rights to release. Making a dataset public is a publication decision, not just a setting.
