Version history & restore

2 min readUpdated 10 July 2026Documents & the editor

Scholardemia keeps snapshots of your document as you work, so you can look back at earlier states, compare them with the current text, and roll back if an edit went the wrong way.

How versions are created

Snapshots are taken automatically at regular intervals while a document is being edited; you do not need to do anything. Each entry in the history is marked Automatic, Manual, or Restored so you can tell how it came about.

To make an important snapshot easy to find later, open it and choose Name this version, for example “Before reviewer edits”.

Browse & compare versions

  1. Open version history

In the editor, choose Version history from the View menu. The panel lists snapshots newest first.

  2. Preview a snapshot

Select a version to read it as it was at that moment. The Preview tab shows the snapshot on its own.

  3. Compare with the current text

Switch to Diff vs current to see what has changed between that snapshot and the document as it stands now.

Restore a version

With a snapshot open, choose Restore version and confirm. The current content is replaced by the snapshot. Be aware that changes made since the most recent snapshot are replaced by a restore, so check the diff before you confirm.

  • Anyone who can open the document can browse and compare versions.
  • Restoring and naming versions requires the Editor or Owner role.
Restore affects everyone. On a shared document, a restore changes the live text for all collaborators, so it is worth a quick note in the document’s chat before you roll back.
